Alberta Kelly RSS
Welcome!  I am Alberta Kelly, and I currently teach third grade at La Merced Elementary School.  This is my twenty-first year of teaching.  I have taught the following grade levels: kindergarten, first, second, third and fifth grade.  I have been the La Merced Spelling Bee Coordinator/Pronouncer for several years.

I earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education as well as a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.  I have a Level 3 Teaching License, and am a National Board Certified Teacher through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplised teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.  As part of the certification process, I completed ten assessments that were reviewed and evaluated by trained experts in my certificate area.  The assessments included four portfolio entries and videos that featured my teaching practices in the classroom, as well as six constructed response exercises that assessed my content knowledge and pedagogical skills.

I chose to pursue National Board Certification because I believe every child deserves an accomplised teacher- one who is qualified to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in school and to succeed in the 21st century global community.  I wanted my teaching skills to be evaluated by experts on national teaching standards, not only state standards, and for my teaching practices to be compared to expert teachers across the nation.  I  attempted national certification because I wanted to know if I measured up to the national teaching standards.

After all these years in the classroom, there is still no place I would rather be than with my little monkeys.  Other than being a mother, there is nothing that has given me a greater sense of fulfillment than teaching.  I have the best job in the world because I have the privilege of shaping young minds, and forming meaningful
relationships with the students in my care.  I have had the honor of being invited to high school and college graduations as well as weddings and baby showers of former students.  It is my job to prepare my students for the next grade level, but I feel it is equally as important for my students to feel confident in their abilities, and to have a strong sense of self.  I earnestly believe that through a strong work ethic and perseverance, my students can and will accomplish any goal they desire.

The following quotes exemplify my teaching philosophy:

An architect knows that if he builds with care,
his structure may stand for centuries.
A teacher knows that if he builds with love and truth,
what he builds will last forever.

Teacher:   Come to the edge.
Students:  It's too tall.
Teacher:   Come to the edge.
Students:  I'll fall.
Teacher:   Come to the edge.
They came to the edge; I pushed them, and the flew.
